Right episode 98. Rob, we’re back.
Rob Broadfoot 0:23
Yeah, we’ve got an exciting one today to talk about considering your love of boy bands.
Don Mock 0:30
Yeah
Rob Broadfoot 0:30
I thought we would do in honor of 98 and entire is gonna be an hour long podcast in celebration of 98 degrees.
Don Mock 0:40
Okay. All right
Rob Broadfoot 0:41
The boy band 98 degrees.
Don Mock 0:42
You’re gonna have to carry this for probably a solid 57 days.
Rob Broadfoot 0:46
Yeah, you’re acting like you don’t know.
Don Mock 0:48
Like I don’t celebrate the entire catalog.
Rob Broadfoot 0:49
Yeah, I’ve seen posters on your office wall.
Don Mock 0:53
All right. How many boy bands can we name? Well, 98 degrees and then you’ve got Backstreet Boys.
Rob Broadfoot 0:59
Yeah. NSYNC
Don Mock 1:00
All right. Okay, NSYNC Okay, so the Jackson Five. Hold on a second here. Well, that’s amazing. Wow, that was a Timehop just for my own clarification. 98 degrees. We’re gonna say Nick Lachey. Right? That’s the you know, that’s the Nick Lachey band?
Rob Broadfoot 1:15
I think so.
Don Mock 1:16
Okay. NSYNC
Rob Broadfoot 1:18
JT
Don Mock 1:19
is JT. Yeah, Backstreet Boys.
Rob Broadfoot 1:22
AJ McLean. He was the one with the facial hair and the tattoo. He was the bad boy.
Don Mock 1:27
He was the bad boy. I don’t know anybody else from the Backstreet Boys. Yeah, I mean, I see them in my mind. You know? From there. I just go Spice Girls, which is not a boy band. I mean, it’s a super group of ladies. So, and at one point, we had a fantastic employee here who celebrated the Spice Girls. absolutely in love with the Spice Girls.
Rob Broadfoot 1:46
Yes. I think a lot of people were in love with the Spice Girls.
Don Mock 1:49
they had their moment you know? And you could say that Sporty Spice Victoria Beckham still very relevant. Of course. All right, but then you Timehop all the way back to Jackson Five
Rob Broadfoot 2:01
that’s an OG boy band but then I think contemporary like BTK. Is it BTK.
Don Mock 2:07
BTS.
Rob Broadfoot 2:08
BTS. BTK is a killer. That’s a serial killer. That’s different.
Don Mock 2:12
Okay. That sounds bad.
Rob Broadfoot 2:13
Yeah. I think BTS right.
Don Mock 2:16
Yeah, I think it’s very popular still European, you know, sort of the dance hop sort of bands and things like that, you know? And, you know, internationally obviously the South Korean sort of J pop and whatever. But I don’t feel like boy bands are as popular here right.
Rob Broadfoot 2:35
you had the Lou Perlman era.
Don Mock 2:37
Yeah. And bad things happened with that guy.
Rob Broadfoot 2:40
He did bad things.
Don Mock 2:43
Well, he took everybody’s money. I mean.
Rob Broadfoot 2:46
Yeah. Managed boybands.
Don Mock 2:49
well, and correct me if I’m wrong a lot of those were Mouseketeers weren’t they?
Rob Broadfoot 2:53
There were from Disney. I think they plucked them from Disney.
Don Mock 2:56
Yeah like oh that’s a performer right there.
Rob Broadfoot 2:58
I mean, yeah, we manufactured this group. And here we go.
Don Mock 3:01
Here’s What I can say about 98 degrees. And that’s our 98th episode. And Nick Lachey is Nick Lachey lives on, especially for me, because I watch horrible reality TV shows on Netflix, which are executive produced and hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey.
Rob Broadfoot 3:21
Oh, he does a lot of those things.
Don Mock 3:22
He does a lot of those dating shows. Right? So Cuyler and I here in the office, were just talking about this horrible show called the ultimatum. And it’s hosted by Nick and his wife. And it’s it funny because it’s like, begrudgingly hosted by them. You know What I mean? Like, he doesn’t seem really into that into it, you know? So he’s got that show. He’s got another show. Oh, I think it was love is blind. Yeah, he does. The love is blind, right? Then he does a whole nother show, where he takes contestants from all of the other love shows and puts them all together. Called the perfect, perfect match and it’s, I mean, I feel like it’s just an excuse for a three week vacation just to film these things.
Rob Broadfoot 4:06
His I think his entree into reality TV was because he was married to Jessica Simpson. And it was Nick and didn’t they have
Don Mock 4:14
they had a show on MTV
Rob Broadfoot 4:18
I don’t remember what it was called but yeah, they had a show.
Don Mock 4:21
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. But now he’s the host of all these things
Rob Broadfoot 4:24
Who wins in a fight between Nick Lachey and Mario Lopez.
Don Mock 4:28
I can’t go against AC Slater. Man. I’m going Mario Lopez every day of the week
Rob Broadfoot 4:34
he beats up he beats up Nick Lachey right
Don Mock 4:36
Although can’t tell you I’ve seen Mario Lopez in anything recent I know he hosts Entertainment Tonight is that what he hosts
Rob Broadfoot 4:43
He hosts a lot of things. I think he hosts Oh, no. You know who hosts America’s Funniest videos is?
Don Mock 4:51
I don’t know. But we don’t know anything. We’re doing this whole pod. Why are we, we’re like five minutes in and we don’t know the answers to any of these things. So it’s it’s hilarious.
Rob Broadfoot 4:58
Oh, gosh, I’m totally blanking on America’s Funniest videos
Don Mock 5:04
Drew Carey
Rob Broadfoot 5:04
no no no
Don Mock 5:05
he does the price is right shout out Bob Barker RIP
Rob Broadfoot 5:08
I’ll come up with it later anyway
Don Mock 5:10
Sick Day King you know
Rob Broadfoot 5:11
Anyway we’ve gone down a crazy path that’s not really What we came here to talk about
Don Mock 5:15
No, but 98 and 98 degrees that’s a funny little side hatch well last time we talked about coffee for you know 10 minutes for crying out loud so you never know What you’re gonna get. We thought it would be interesting. You know Barbie is taken over Mattel Barbie the movie The movie made a billion dollars We’ve got people in our family that have seen Barbie multiple times. I went and saw Barbie absolutely loved it. Right. And I’ve been telling everybody it’s not What I thought it was going to be. I didn’t really have any preconceived notions, but I was like, Oh, wow, okay, well, What you know. And it’s Oh, it’s it’s a it’s a toy. Right. And we’ve had these other really bad toy movies, right? Like, you know battleship somehow became a movie and things like that.
Rob Broadfoot 5:58
Well, I mean, we had I mean, Barney. Remember all the Barney shows and Barney TV and the dinosaur?
Don Mock 6:05
Yeah. Yeah. But Was Barney a toy before that? Oh, I don’t know which one came first.
Rob Broadfoot 6:12
I think Barney was a toy and became a series but anyway
Don Mock 6:17
So I thought everyone would get a kick out of what’s your classic board games dude classic board you know, what’s your favorite classical board game or anything board game related Right. Hasbro has come out and said, Hey, transformers is an unbelievable franchise at maximum kajillion dollars. Barbie just made a gajillion dollars for Mattel. You know, we’re gonna do we’re gonna make basically every toy in our toy line. We’re gonna make a movie. So I mean, everything is going to become a movie now. It’s IP that everybody’s familiar with. Right? And, you know, it’s just about what’s the story we can craft around?
Rob Broadfoot 6:50
Yeah, how do we do it in an interesting way.
Don Mock 6:51
How do we do it? Or how do we modernize it or revolutionize it? Right. So So I guess, you know, without thinking about them from necessarily a movie or television perspective, right. Favorite board games? Any any initial board games that come to mind?
Rob Broadfoot 6:51
I’ve always loved as a kid. And it’s worth noting, board games are still tremendously popular. I mean, they were you know, if you think about back in the 80s when when we were growing up
Don Mock 7:17
Parker Brothers, bro.
Rob Broadfoot 7:18
Parker Brothers. And you and you had so many commercials around board games. I mean, so many you sunk my battleship. Yeah, I mean, that was kind of one of them.
Don Mock 7:30
And then it was electronic talking battleship. You know, they just kept reinventing their own things
Rob Broadfoot 7:35
Let’s make a movie around battleship.
Don Mock 7:36
Well, they did it.
Oh they did?
Yeah, there’s a battleship movie.
Rob Broadfoot 7:39
Oh my gosh. Somehow I missed that one.
Don Mock 7:41
It was horrible. Of course. I watched it. Can’t tell you anything about it
Rob Broadfoot 7:45
I was a big back to the question. I was a big fan of Clue. Yeah, I loved Clue just because I love the character.
Don Mock 7:52
Colonel Mustard.
Rob Broadfoot 7:54
Yeah, there was Colonel Mustard and you had the candlestick and the rope. And you had the library in the den and the kitchen and
Don Mock 8:00
to keep the theme going, though, clue was a movie.
Rob Broadfoot 8:02
Clue was a movie. I didn’t see it
Don Mock 8:05
Oh, it’s fantastic. It’s a great movie.
Rob Broadfoot 8:08
I didn’t see it. When would that have come out? I do remember that. There was a movie, but I didn’t saw it. But yeah, Clue was always. I love that one. That was one of my favorites. We were a big Candyland. Okay,
Don Mock 8:21
Okay, Clue. Did you play it as a family though? Before?
Rob Broadfoot 8:23
Oh, yeah.
Don Mock 8:23
Okay. Okay. So everybody played.
Rob Broadfoot 8:24
Oh yeah, the big ones in our house were candyland, Chutes and Ladders.
Don Mock 8:29
Candyland kind of sucks. I’m just gonna put that out there. Dude. There’s no dice.
Rob Broadfoot 8:32
No, it’s not a great one but it’s a good starter board game. You can’t go right to Clue.
Don Mock 8:39
No. Like if you’re three or four candyland gives you the premise of moving pieces on a board game you have to like take cards
Rob Broadfoot 8:48
It’s a gateway board game.
Don Mock 8:49
Yeah, exactly. That’s a good way to put it.
Rob Broadfoot 8:51
Chutes and Ladders is always a fun one
Don Mock 8:52
unbelievably frustrating game that takes forever.
Rob Broadfoot 8:56
It can take forever.
Don Mock 8:57
It’s like you because you gotta hit it right, right. Otherwise up. You gotta go back. And you know, yeah,
Rob Broadfoot 9:01
There was a monopoly movie too. Wasn’t there?
Don Mock 9:04
I don’t know.
Rob Broadfoot 9:05
I think there was a monopoly movie
Don Mock 9:07
We’re woefully unprepared for this.
Rob Broadfoot 9:10
Monopoly was a great one tho but speaking of games that took forever.
Don Mock 9:14
Yeah,Monopoly took forever so what’s your favorite though? What’s your favorite board game? For any reason?
Rob Broadfoot 9:20
It’s got to be Clue. I think it’s got to be I think it’s got to be Clue.
Don Mock 9:24
Yeah, so I didn’t you know, I didn’t have any brothers or sisters growing up. only child over here. So I did have a rough time on board games. Solitaire. Yeah, we. So I would say for me the truth I’ll give you my favorite board game that I really enjoyed playing as a kid and then one that has lasted a lot. sustained the last of time and we still play today. Stratego? That’s a very random one.
Rob Broadfoot 9:49
I remember I remember that it exists, but I have no idea.
Stratego was my favorite board game to play with when friends came over. Because it’s a two person thing. You don’t need a whole bunch of people. It’s a very, you know, and it was basically Like, Here’s my set of army men on one side there’s your set of army men on your side and then you have to advance and you try to find you know, you know the what’s considered the king or whatever that right and it’s just by numbers it’s just you know, hit the bomb layers are number eight, the SS the spy, like just kind of advance and you edits whoever has the better player wins that little skirmish or whatever. So just a strategy game on like, Where do you hide your your players? And where do you put like the landmines and the traps and things like that, right? So Stratego primarily because it was a two person game. It was very easy to play, you know, but I would say the game that I still enjoy to this day and that we play as a family still to this day is Jenga. Yeah, Jenga and Jenga is, is that a board game?
That was my question. Is that a board game?
Don Mock 10:53
All right. Well, no, you’re probably correct. It’s probably not a board game to be honest.
Rob Broadfoot 10:57
Is Dungeons and Dragons a board game?
Don Mock 11:00
Yeah, so I did play d&d as a kid.
Rob Broadfoot 11:02
But that would be considered a board game?
Don Mock 11:04
I think. So you’re rolling dice
Rob Broadfoot 11:06
But it’s not a board
Don Mock 11:07
Well, yeah, I guess you’re right. I mean,
Rob Broadfoot 11:11
I kinda think there’s board game stuff
Don Mock 11:12
It’s considered it’s considered an RPG. Role Playing Game. So probably not a board game, I guess. Yeah, but Jenga. We’ve got the gigantic set of Jenga.
Rob Broadfoot 11:22
Oh, the big one.
Don Mock 11:22
with the huge blocks, which like, oh, man, you can get that thing like six feet tall, if not taller. You know What I mean? Which makes the loudest crash when it falls. It is like epically loud you know? Yeah. But so yeah, maybe I’m breaking the rules a little bit with with Jenga but did love Jenga. I mean,
Rob Broadfoot 11:40
Alright. what about Yahtzee Did you ever play Yahtzee?
Don Mock 11:40
I never been a Yahtzee fan.
Rob Broadfoot 11:40
My grandparents loved Yahtzee so we played a lot.
Don Mock 11:40
So that was With the dice right? You put the dice in the cup. Yeah. Never got into that never got into boggle. Oh, you know,
I’ve got an obscure one.
Rob Broadfoot 11:54
Did you ever heard about Rocco.
Don Mock 11:55
Rocco. No, R A C C O? How do you spell it
Rob Broadfoot 11:58
R A C K O I believe.
Don Mock 11:59
Ok. What was the deal there?
Rob Broadfoot 12:01
You had a little plastic card holder and you had you had to get it was either eight or 10 cards in in numeric order, okay, but they didn’t have to be consecutive numbers it just had to go from lowest to highest. And it was a series of drawing and you could trade could do all the thing I mean, it’s a very basic game yeah. But played a played a lot of RACKO.
Don Mock 12:25
I mean, again, breaking the rules here about board games. I mean, still a great family game is UNO, speaking of cards,
Rob Broadfoot 12:33
UNO is a great game
Don Mock 12:33
I mean, UNO is fantastic
Rob Broadfoot 12:34
UNO is a classic
Don Mock 12:35
Yeah. Many versions of that. They did come up with a DOS Have you ever played DOS? It’s not good. Not good. Not Not a fan just stick with UNO, man. Yeah, well, I mean hey, they’re trying
Rob Broadfoot 12:46
No, I get it.
Don Mock 12:49
It’s a little more complicated a little bit more. Basically, you play it and you’re thinking to yourself, Why am I not just playing UNO? Like why why am I trying something different? Yeah, so But again, that’s probably breaking the rules
Rob Broadfoot 13:02
Right. What about Twister, A is Twister a board game and B Did you ever play it?
Don Mock 13:06
I will say I played a lot more Twister in college than I did growing up.
Rob Broadfoot 13:12
Yeah I think I know why.
Don Mock 13:13
Yeah exactly, Twister. Yeah. I mean, Twister is not a board game. It’s a party game.
Rob Broadfoot 13:23
It’s a party game. Yeah.
Don Mock 13:24
it’s a party game. It’s it’s not a board game. I don’t think.
Rob Broadfoot 13:27
It’s not a fun game.
Don Mock 13:28
No, I played it a few times as a kid you know, you play it at like after school things and they’re you know but like it’s not Yeah, it’s it’s not a good family game night. It’s far more fun in college
Rob Broadfoot 13:42
It’s far more fun with with with college coeds.
Don Mock 13:46
Yeah, exactly. Yeah. It’s family podcast, though. Yeah, Twister. I mean, we mentioned monopoly. I’m trying to think of What else
Connect 4 is that a board game? I mean,
No, no, no, but we played that from time to time.
Rob Broadfoot 14:00
We played a lot of Connect 4
Don Mock 14:01
That’s a fun one.
Rob Broadfoot 14:03
Parcheesi.
Don Mock 14:04
Never played parcheesi.
Rob Broadfoot 14:05
Parcheesi is a pretty good one. Yeah.
Don Mock 14:08
You used to play sorry a lot. Didn’t you with your girls? Yeah, we never really played sorry.
Rob Broadfoot 14:14
Yeah, going up and getting around. Sorry is a good one.
Don Mock 14:17
I think for our family, anything that was too combative. You know, like, oop, I’m taking your pieces or knocking it like
Rob Broadfoot 14:25
It didn’t go Well?
Don Mock 14:26
It’s set up for some disastrous consequences, you know, so it was really just you against the board, you know? Now I will say I used to play I had a great friend growing up still a great friend to this day, Josh. And we used to play Life all the time. The Game of Life. Yeah, life’s a fun one you got your little car and just a little pets.
Rob Broadfoot 14:46
Well, life and certainly monopoly had the sort of quasi Well, monopoly definitely had the educational component life had a quasi educational component Oh, you just got in a car wreck and now you have to pay this and that. So it did have some Real World sort of circumstances
Don Mock 15:01
And It told the story
Rob Broadfoot 15:02
And I told the story. Yeah, right. But yeah, I mean, monopoly is a great one. I mean, that’s how people first learned about real estate. I mean, yeah. And you had you know, get out of jail free cards. Like they made its way into the into the government vernacular. There was absolutely a monopoly movie. I’m going back to that.
Don Mock 15:25
I don’t have my phone on me.
Rob Broadfoot 15:25
Somebody can fact check me. But I’m pretty certain it was.
Don Mock 15:28
All right. I was I just had another one and I lost it because it just went out in the ether. Oh, well.
Rob Broadfoot 15:35
The worst is when you go back to play a board game and the pieces are missing. Not as frustrating as puzzle pieces missing. Are puzzle pieces board games? Not really.
Don Mock 15:46
Puzzles are not board games. No, no, that’s that’s its own.
Rob Broadfoot 15:50
I do love a good puzzle tho.
Don Mock 15:51
That’s its own genre. So Oh, I’m so upset I just spaced I should have wrote it down. Oh, Risk. That’s What I was thinking.
Rob Broadfoot 16:00
Oh, yeah. That’s it’s a game of strategy.
Don Mock 16:02
That’s a game I never played growing up. But I’ve played more as an adult and that’s a great iPhone game, too. Right? Yeah. You get the app or whatever. You know, better older
Rob Broadfoot 16:18
I don’t think I’ve ever played Risk
Don Mock 16:20
Too complicated. I’ve got three soldiers in India, and I’m invading China and like Yeah, you got to take over continents and you get like, yeah, it’s too it was it was too complicated as a kid, you know, but But hey, if I’ve got a little app that’ll do all the math and everything for me great just do that. Yeah, but Stratego man, I mean, do yourself a favor and look up some Stratego. Mouse trap that was a classic one. Well,
Rob Broadfoot 16:46
Oh mouse trap was great. Yeah. I mean, everybody loves building those. What do you call that?
Don Mock 16:51
The little cage?
Rob Broadfoot 16:53
Yeah, but there’s that like,
Don Mock 16:54
What the spinners and all that stuff?
Rob Broadfoot 16:55
Yeah. What were you used to be able to buy those kits that had like, not Erector sets, but although I did love a good Erector Set. Yeah. But the kid where it’s like, oh my gosh, now and it’s a ramp and the ball is going down and doing all because that was mousetrap.
Don Mock 17:07
Yeah, well, yeah. It’s like trying to build your own little Rube Goldberg machine where the ball goes here and it goes down the wall it hits the knocks over the domino which hits the thing
Rob Broadfoot 17:18
Yeah, loved that. Domino is not a game I played a lot.
Don Mock 17:21
No. I don’t even really know how to play dominoes. If I mean if we’re being totally honest.
Rob Broadfoot 17:30
What about like, checkers? Chess or backgammon? What about those three?
Don Mock 17:36
The first two? Yes. Backgammon? Not not really a big fan of I do love a good old fashioned checkers. So that’ll that’ll get some kids to flip the board too when you kick their ass in Checkers
Rob Broadfoot 17:48
Triple jump?
Don Mock 17:46
Yeah And it’s like, oh, just took three of your characters. And you know, like, or pieces. I shouldn’t say characters. But yeah, I’m a fan of checkers. Checkers. Checkers is a good one. And I like chess, but I don’t really have anybody to play chess with. Yeah. So I don’t love it that much to search it out.
Rob Broadfoot 18:05
We’ve got a this old, like kind of rustic tic tac toe board And we will play until somebody wins. And it takes forever, forever. But finally, somebody slips up and just ah, I mean, you don’t even have to, no one finishes the game. And then that’s it.
Don Mock 18:23
Oh cmon you got to finish you got to put those pieces in.
Rob Broadfoot 18:27
Well usually the person who loses gets frustrated
Don Mock 18:32
That’s funny. That’s really funny. Yeah, well, yeah, it’s, you know, it’s fun. I mean, you know, be curious to see What the next unexpected smash hit is, I guess, you know, like, I wouldn’t have expected Barbie to be this global phenomenon but it does have a great message. We’re not going into the message on this but it’s it’s a fantastic movie but you know, it’s it’s Hey, yeah, is, you know, parcheesi or backgammon, or monopoly Well, according to you, we’ve already got a monopoly movie, but like, you know, like, all the different you know, is suddenly
Rob Broadfoot 19:02
I’m gonna watch the Clue movie.
Don Mock 19:04
You should watch it.
Rob Broadfoot 19:05
Who’s in it? Do you remember?
Don Mock 19:06
I think it’s the guy from Rocky Horror Picture Show, isn’t it? I couldn’t tell you who like Any of those people, you know, but, but yeah,
Rob Broadfoot 19:15
that would make me that seems like it would make a great movie if done correctly.
Don Mock 19:19
I feel like it’s a late 80s You know, lightning outside you know, Thunder
Rob Broadfoot 19:24
Flickering candelabras. All that good stuff.
Don Mock 19:27
Yeah, we’re in this old mansion kind of thing going on? Yeah, like Yeah,
Rob Broadfoot 19:30
The lights go off they come back on and oh someone’s laying there dead. what happened?
Don Mock 19:34
Yeah, exactly and you’re holding the candlestick. You’ve got the gun. Right. There’s a scream in the other room. Yeah, yeah, I couldn’t tell you What happens in that movie but I do remember watching out as a kid I feel like
Rob Broadfoot 19:45
Yeah, it’s out there.
Don Mock 19:46
Yeah, Clue is a good one. All right. Well, maybe drop us a line. Let us know What your favorite board game is
Rob Broadfoot 19:51
Yeah, I know what’s gonna happen is we’re gonna walk out and be like, Oh my gosh, I totally forgot about
Don Mock 19:55
about XYZ.
Rob Broadfoot 19:56
So anyway, board games, love them.
Don Mock 19:58
Drop us a line.
Rob Broadfoot 19:59

Rob Broadfoot 20:20
Name of the band. One word, Nena.
Don Mock 20:23
Nena? I wouldn’t have guessed that in a million.
Rob Broadfoot 20:28
Pretty sure that’s it.
Don Mock 20:29
Okay. Wow. All right. Well, we’ll fact check it Yeah. All right.
