Don Mock 0:22
Episode 103 We’re back Rob.
Rob Broadfoot 0:24
We’re back.
Don Mock 0:24
We should just change the name of the podcast to we’re back Rob how about that?
Rob Broadfoot 0:29
I’m okay with that.
Don Mock 0:31
I only imagine people binging this listening episode after episode for hours. And they hear the same sort of spiel. At the beginning of every episode, however, we don’t do it you know we only do this once a day. Right? So it’s, it’s, it’s new to us. But anyway, we’re back. 103 As you said, v 103.
Rob Broadfoot 0:52
I know I did drop a V 103 reference.
Don Mock 0:54
Yeah Last pod. Do you have any V 103 stories
Rob Broadfoot 0:58
V 103 was for those who don’t remember or know was an Atlanta long standing Atlanta radio station.
Don Mock 1:05
Is it not a radio station anymore? I wouldn’t know.
Rob Broadfoot 1:08
I don’t know because I don’t listen to terrestrial radio any longer. But it was kind of the r&b
Don Mock 1:14
And popular hits. pop hits. I feel like it was Ryan Cameron. Wasn’t he the famous DJ on V 103. Well, you would know him because he’s also the Hawks announcer or he was for a quite number of years. You know. Anyway, again, fact checkers people Maybe we’re totally
Rob Broadfoot 1:35
I don’t know the V 103. I would be surprised if it still existed only because radio station changed all the time.
Don Mock 1:42
They do.
Rob Broadfoot 1:42
I’m all Sirius XM. It’s all I do.
Don Mock 1:47
I used to only listen to talk radio in the car sports talk. I would listen to sports talk, like constant sports talk and my commute. I’m blessed in that My commute is not very long. So I’d pop into some sports talk, get some Falcons then get some national sports talk, you know, and then poof, I’m out. You know, now I got a new car. So I’ve got a good radio that just magically connects to my phone. And now I just listen to whatever, whatever. Oh, it’s interesting. Actually. Whatever I’m listening to in my office when I leave and get in my car. It’s now playing in my car.
Rob Broadfoot 2:19
I still have so in my car iTunes plays
Don Mock 2:26
Do you have a dongle? Do you like plug something?
Rob Broadfoot 2:28
Oh, no it’s all Bluetooth. But iTunes plays and I’m not even joking you. I don’t know how many songs are in that library. I don’t know where it came from it still knows where it is. My phone does.
Don Mock 2:42
Yeah, every once in a while my Spotify will not connect and it’ll be like, oh track one of 7280 and I’m like, are those songs on my phones?
Rob Broadfoot 2:51
It’s all songs on your phone It’s crazy now just got somehow took over iTunes? Yes. It’s there.
Don Mock 2:57
I used to do Apple Music. But then my family switched over, you know, is long time Spotify. And they’re so entrenched. They will not leave it. You know?
Rob Broadfoot 3:06
I’m good with Spotify.
Don Mock 3:07
Yeah, you know, a lot of my favorite albums are not on there. You know, they’re still to this day. Yeah. Artists drop out. Or, like I had noticed I was rocking Van Halen the other day and the new David Lee, the newer David Lee Roth, whichever got back together that one conspicuously absent, so there’s little things like that.
Rob Broadfoot 3:27
I’m okay with that.
Don Mock 3:29
I mean, it’s not a great album.
Rob Broadfoot 3:31
If you’re going to lose one from the catalog that’s the one to lose.
Don Mock 3:34
for sure. For sure. But, and I guess you know, I don’t know. I mean, I’m pro artists, like pay the artists. I mean, I just bought a record for crying out loud. Not because I’m gonna listen to the record. But because hey, like, throw, throw some artists a couple bucks go buy a ticket to a concert.
Rob Broadfoot 3:49
I’ll buy the merch. I’ll buy the concert ticket. But I only listened to. I mean, on my commute. Here and home. I listen to Howard Stern.
Don Mock 3:57
Yeah you’re Stern guy. And he only does three, three.
Rob Broadfoot 4:01
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
Don Mock 4:02
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday? Okay, so What do they play Thursday, Friday, just credits
Rob Broadfoot 4:07
Repeats of the earlier days of the week but they’ll kind of chop them up and segment them out. But then there’s also like the there’s the after show there’s all kinds of stuff.
Don Mock 4:19
Whoa, like going deep, like back into the archives.
Rob Broadfoot 4:23
It stern theology goes back into the archives, but it also plays their take on What happened in the morning. Reactions to the morning show.
Don Mock 4:33
Gotcha. Gotcha. Now, how long is each one of those episodes that he records?
Rob Broadfoot 4:38
I don’t know What time is. I think they’re three hours. I think they’re either three or four. He’s on for a good long he did a Paul Simon interview the other day.
Don Mock 4:46
I mean, you and I both agree that he is one of the greatest interviewers
Rob Broadfoot 4:49
Arguably the best.
Don Mock 4:51
Yeah, I mean, it’s incredible and and it’s it’s not it’s it’s a it’s I’m fumbling over my own words here. Barbara Walters used to Get by the end kind of joked upon on how she’d make everybody cry, right? And it was able to extract, you know, information from people and able to go and ask people sensitive questions, right? There’s kind of a correlation there with stern and you’re far more the aficionado than I am in this regard. But he’s able to get people to share things, and really go deep. I feel like a lot of his interviews, he’s uplifting and jovial and, you know, but then can be super serious and like, you know, no BS kind of approach.
He is still as disgusting as ever.
I know, which is so bizarre.
Rob Broadfoot 5:34
It’s so great. The dichotomy of like, fart jokes is like rated G. I mean, he goes gruesome, gross. But but you have that and then you have the most insightful two hour interview with Bruce Springsteen’s and it’s like, it attracts every boyish sensibility, but then also intellectual content. It’s kind of like, well, his book is great to his book of interviews is great, which, of course, like it’s the best interviews ever, but it’s called Howard Stern comes again. Of course, of course it is. Yeah. And it’s pretty amazing.
Don Mock 6:08
It’s interesting that he’s never really grown out of fart man, and all that sort of just unbelievably inappropriate humor. You know, like you think you’d you’d kind of age a little bit and sort of chill out on playing fart noises. Yeah, I mean, like, but no, no, those those two worlds live together. So interesting character, the only book I’ve ever I did read private parts a million years ago. I think a lot of people did.
Rob Broadfoot 6:33
The movie was pretty good.
Don Mock 6:34
I mean, I haven’t seen that. I mean, you’re a fan.
Rob Broadfoot 6:37
Yes, it’s pretty good. Yeah, it holds up so.
Don Mock 6:40
Alright, well, wow. Well, there’s a little five minutes on radio. We weren’t gonna jump on and talk about it. But V 103 led us down that down that path. However, I think today’s topic does kind of dovetail into radio, musical artists.
Rob Broadfoot 6:51
It does,
Don Mock 6:52
you know, and first,
Rob Broadfoot 6:53
let me say bababooey
Don Mock 6:55
there you go.
Rob Broadfoot 6:56
Okay, you gotta drop one of this.
Don Mock 6:58
Just to punctuate the stern.
Rob Broadfoot 7:00
Somebody will hear it somewhere and laugh.
Don Mock 7:01
Yeah, well, um, we’ll put this on our website and then someone will end up searching for bababooey And you know, it’s gonna be magical. So But speaking of magical all the rage, all the news, we can’t get away from it. It doesn’t matter What corner of the internet you’re on What your hobbies are, What you’re interested in. Taylor Swift has permeated all aspects of human life on the entire planet. Right? I am. I am What I would I am far from a Swifty definitely not a swift no knock on Swift. I mean, love, you know, love What you love while just not personally, my jam, as anybody who’s listening to this podcast probably knows. But the worlds collided obviously with Taylor Swift jumping into one of my personal hobbies, which is watching NFL football. And I was sitting there watching on Sunday, and she obviously went to the Kansas City Chiefs game and evidently is dating Travis Kelce. The the tight end for the chiefs. Right? And it was like, actually, well, well, exactly. Exactly. What isn’t that kind of the fun? And it was like, Hey, are we going to watch any football? Are we just going to keep cutting into Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce mom? Yeah, then we’re gonna watch players waving. Like
Rob Broadfoot 8:13
She totally owned the game.
Don Mock 8:17
Yeah. Who cares about What the final score was? I mean, it’s all about Taylor up there cheering and whatnot. Right? So but it leads us to you read an interesting snippet today or article or whatever you want about how it’s brands and things now
Rob Broadfoot 8:30
Yeah. And there’s a few different there’s, I think a few different points in her career to date. That had been pretty interesting and the effect that they’ve caused in business and brands and things like that. Most recently will go backwards. Most recently. Yeah, so I guess she’s at the game. And somebody snapped a picture of her right and wrote the comment. Apparently she it appears as though she’s eating a chicken tender. And and ketchup and seemingly ranch.
Don Mock 8:30
Seemingly ranch was the quote, We know a lot about chicken tenders.
Rob Broadfoot 9:04
Chicken tenders are huge right now.
Don Mock 9:05
Yeah. Well, we work on.
Rob Broadfoot 9:07
We work on a lot of them. But I mean, they are they are infiltrated the internet.
Don Mock 9:10
Okay, but we’re eating our tenders in in ketchup and seemingly ranch.
Rob Broadfoot 9:14
that was the comment on the picture that somebody posted on the internet.
Don Mock 9:19
But now has like 12 million likes.
Rob Broadfoot 9:20
We’re on Wednesday now. And Heinz has already come out. So Heinz is the official provider of all the condiments In Kansas City, right but they came out today. I mean, it’s all over CNN and all over everywhere. It’s it’s you can’t get away from swifties and they have announced they are releasing 100 bottles of seemingly ranch they are branding seemingly ranch in honor of Taylor Swift, I think they do a contest. You can register to win them or whatever
Don Mock 9:53
How long until one of those things hits Ebay.
Rob Broadfoot 9:57
I mean, when first person wins.
Don Mock 9:58
That same day it comes out. Right.
Rob Broadfoot 10:01
But it’s but it’s just amazing to me that, you know, obviously backed by by swift popularity that a brand in this day and age and it’s great. I mean, this is What sort of digital and all these things have allowed us to do that a brand can react like that. Yeah, right.
Don Mock 10:18
well we joke about moving at the speed of business and here you are. Yeah, giant giant packaged goods company
Rob Broadfoot 10:24
And just PR alone out of just doing I mean it costs them nothing. Nothing. And the PR alone that they will get out of that is incredible. Not only the PR that they’ll get but Swifty points her army at you, you better look out or embrace it depending on where you fall. But I mean, you’ve got to figure that out of her I mean, I don’t know how many millions or 10s of millions of fans she has, but well, they all eat Heinz ketchup starting like today.
Don Mock 10:54
Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
Rob Broadfoot 10:55
Yeah, like hunt’s. Hunt’s is dead.
Don Mock 10:58
we’ve done a previous pod about the power of celebrity endorsement and is it worth it and stuff like that? And I think part of not to sum up a podcast in five seconds, but part of it is it’s got to be the right person. Right? Um, you know, and not to dovetail off of Taylor Swift, but the guy that started Rick and Morty, I know you’re not a big cartoon guy. But Justin Roiland. Right. super successful writer. Adult Swim created a show multiples. You know, he, he had his Dave Chappelle moment, right. Oh we’re doing this little cartoon and all of a sudden blew up. We got a 10 year subscription. I totally freaked out. I don’t know how to write any you don’t even like like, like how the whole anyway, super, super popular franchise. I mean, you’re a bad person. Oh, you’re running around. You’re touching. He’s doing bad things. You’re out. You know what I mean, so all these brands that had tied on to Adult Swim, and this and that. It’s like, What do we do? And then also, oh, my God, we sold like 10s of 100 million dollars into this thing to make more cartoons. You know? Now they’re in the news, because that season’s coming back again. And the big news is obviously he’s not part of it. Yeah. And he also did the voices, right. So everyone’s like, Oh, my God, we gotta listen, does he sound the same as the character you know, things like that? Right? So you gotta get you got to get the right person. But by all accounts, I mean, Swift is the right personnel for for anything.
Rob Broadfoot 12:12
If you look at if you look at her career at least as much as we know about it, she’s kind of bulletproof. I mean, you’re talking about a reliable celebrity endorsement. I mean, she’s all for empowering young women, which we’re all for
Don Mock 12:29
Absolutely right.
Rob Broadfoot 12:30
You can’t go wrong there. She then did that whole thing where Scooter Braun sold her catalog.
Don Mock 12:36
Yeah, I was about to say the only kerfuffle might be this business aspect. But I wouldn’t consider it a kerfuffle.
Rob Broadfoot 12:41
It’s not a kerfuffle at all.
Don Mock 12:42
Everyone agrees with, Hey, you wrote those songs. Those should be yours.
Rob Broadfoot 12:45
And you know What she did? And I don’t understand why other artists don’t. She just went out and re recorded all of them and released her own version of them.
Don Mock 12:52
Exactly, exactly.
Rob Broadfoot 12:53
Which is a and there are a lot of smarter people than I am about, but like, why haven’t other artists done that? And I guess it has to do with owning the publishing maybe versus owning, or owning the lyrics versus owning the publishing the publishing or I don’t know, there’s some nuance that allowed her to do it. Anyway. Great. That’s women’s empowerment. I’m taking back what’s mine and again,
Don Mock 13:15
Let me write a song about it, by the way.
Rob Broadfoot 13:17
Yeah. And the everyone’s seen that, I mean, the ticket sales alone to this last two are insane. And it’s literally just
Don Mock 13:27
She broke Ticketmaster. I mean, she might be the one that created Congress. I mean, oh, was
Rob Broadfoot 13:31
She was both of my daughter’s first concert. And I’m going years years years now. And now it’s like, this was my my stepdaughters first concert we got her tickets to this last one. And the video is just her I mean, as soon as Taylor Swift comes on stage, our wife points the camera and it’s I mean,
Don Mock 13:52
Buckets of tears.
Rob Broadfoot 13:53
Beatles like Beatles melt down. I mean, it’s just yeah, which again, we can all celebrate happiness, And music and whatever else. And then also to back to business for a second. I mean, even by proxy Kelce’s Jersey Overnight for I think it was a 400%.
Don Mock 14:10
400% increase it’s What they said.
Rob Broadfoot 14:12
And not only not only his jersey but whatever Jacket he was wearing some weird or unique outfit when he was there was a video of him walking when they were leaving together
Don Mock 14:21
okay. Pregame postgame
Rob Broadfoot 14:23
Postgame leaving together to get in his convertible. The guy knows What he’s doing. That jacket apparently sold out.
Don Mock 14:30
That’s insane. Yeah, okay. I didn’t realize there was video because I did see day of Sunday. I did see a tremendous volume on the internet of people thinking that she was hiding in some type of popcorn machine to get out of Did you see this too late to get out of the stadium and I’m like, What What is happening? What is happening right now on the internet this is unbelievable
Rob Broadfoot 14:34
during the tour, the era’s tour She would oftentimes, they would put her in a in a gear case, to wheel around or wherever and that was the whole thing you had tospot oh my gosh, she’s in there. So yeah, so people naturally was like she’s in the popcorn machine
Don Mock 15:14
It Down in the tunnel system of Arrowhead or wherever. So weird.
Rob Broadfoot 15:18
But there’s video of her and Kelce’s leaving together okay. And then they went and got in his, we all know way too much about this.
Don Mock 15:26
I don’t want to know this stuff. This isn’t important to me.
Rob Broadfoot 15:28
So they left in the convertible so that everyone, not in the black SUV. It opens up. Yeah, he’s no dummy. He’ll have a song written about him in six months or a year.
Don Mock 15:41
Yeah, for sure. Something about tight ends.
Rob Broadfoot 15:45
For better or worse.
Don Mock 15:46
Yeah, there’s a tight end joke in there somewhere. But the power of Taylor, you know, What I mean? Is is just, it’s unbelievable. I mean, from a business perspective, and from a marketing perspective, from a brand perspective, it really is absolutely unbelievable. You know,
Rob Broadfoot 16:02
I mean, would you say I said this yesterday. I think she’s the most famous person in the world right now.
Don Mock 16:09
She could be I mean, arguably, she could be.
Rob Broadfoot 16:13
I mean, you have others like Zelensky, people like that or Putin and people that are
Don Mock 16:18
Well, world leaders or something. Right.
Rob Broadfoot 16:21
You could obviously put them in the in the tier one. I think she’s like
Don Mock 16:25
I think she might be a tier one.
I think she’s a tier one. She’s my tier one.
I mean, remember when Jay Leno used to jaywalking, and it was who’s the president of the united states and half the people here don’t even know you know like She is, uh, you know, I would say Western Europe. You know, South Africa, Australia, you know, I mean, you know, she’s gotta be she’s tier one, man. So, I had made the joke. Is she is she this generations? You know, Michael Jackson.
Rob Broadfoot 16:56
Absolutely. She’s the Beatles.
Don Mock 16:59
Right. Yeah. Unbelievable. How old is she? I don’t even know. She’s young right?
Rob Broadfoot 17:03
That’s a good question I mean,
Well, let’s put it this way. There are many more albums left to come. If that’s What she wants to do. You know what I mean if she wants to keep writing and performing
I don’t see the Taylor train stopping anytime soon, and I’m here for it. Yeah, I’m here for it.
Don Mock 17:17
Good for you. I mean, I don’t I
Rob Broadfoot 17:19
She writes great songs.
Don Mock 17:21
I respect the Taylor train. I’m all for it. Just like I respect Madonna. Like, I mean, am I a huge Madonna fan? Absolutely not, you know, I do respect. Wow. or U2 for example, like you started this way. Then you have evolved. You’ve changed. I mean, you think about, like a virgin to like Ali G and that ray of light? Like, I mean, Madonna has, you know, and she writes all our song and all that good stuff. Right. So like mad respect.
Rob Broadfoot 17:47
I think that’s I think the commonality there is is authentic. She writes her own stuff. All of these people were talking about, right. I mean, it’s not like every other pop star. Where it’s Oh, no, you got songs from somebody and recorded somebody else’s songs and whatever else.
Don Mock 18:06
I think I mean, there’s an industry I mean, of just, we just write songs, and we sell them off to artists.
Rob Broadfoot 18:10
Oh, yeah. Oh, there’s there’s a lot of that it happens in country music a lot.
Don Mock 18:14
Yeah. It seems like that’s a Nashville thing. Yeah. Well, I mean, good on Heinz
Rob Broadfoot 18:21
Good on Heinz. It’s a great, quick move by the marketing team, and again, like little effort, like great idea, a little effort. Huge reward.
Don Mock 18:32
Yeah, maximum bang for that one. Any other tidbits you’d like to leave us about Taylor Swift before we sign off for the day. I have no Taylor Swift tidbits.
Rob Broadfoot 18:42
I mean, that’s really all I got. But I look forward to What she does next. Oh, let’s make a prediction. All right. Kelce, what’s the… How long will they stay together?
Don Mock 18:59
I mean, I don’t know really much about her personal life. I don’t know. I think that Kelce years ago, had a dating show of his own and you know, he’s an NFL guy, not dissimilar to like a Gronk of the world that kind of it’s, Hey, we’re having fun. You know, we’re living our best life which is good for you. You know,
Rob Broadfoot 19:13
We’ve transcended NFL and went pop culture. Yeah.
Don Mock 19:15
And and good for him. He does a lot of commercials. Like a lot of the guys that feel very comfortable. Being self effacing
Rob Broadfoot 19:23
The Mannings are kind of like that.
Don Mock 19:24
Yeah, exactly, you know. So I am going to say this is a tough one. I think it’s going to be less than a year. I don’t think they’re going over a year you know, so I mean, are we saying this time you know 2024 I mean, summer 2024 It’s done with before summer 2024
Rob Broadfoot 19:43
I think it’s more of a flash in the pan and I think
Don Mock 19:47
We’re done by the end of the year.
Rob Broadfoot 19:48
You got the holidays right around the corner, are they gonna ramp up for the holidays or not? I think they do. I think they ramp I think they ride this thing through the holidays, but I see springtime. Yeah, I’m gonna say around April 17.
Don Mock 20:04
Wow. Okay, that’s a very specific date that I’m familiar with. Also in a great song lyric, right?
Rob Broadfoot 20:12
Sublime.
Don Mock 20:12
Is it a Sublime song? Wow I didn’t know that. No, I was thinking about A love extreme. Our guy Benji Hughes.
Rob Broadfoot 20:21
right yeah, there’s there’s a song called
Don Mock 20:24
I don’t know if that’s the name of the song but I know it’s I know it’s a part of the song.
Rob Broadfoot 20:28
I think it’s in the sublime song about the riots. Okay, I think somebody fact check me but I’m pretty sure it is.
Don Mock 20:35
I think like it’s April 24.
Rob Broadfoot 20:37
Maybe it is April 26 1992. Anyways.
Don Mock 20:42
Let’s go rock some sublime after this. Alright, everybody well where can people find us and chat us up and discourse about Swifties
Rob Broadfoot 20:50
