Don Mock 0:19
All right, Episode 67. We’re back.
Zoe Mock 0:29
(laughing)
Don Mock 0:29
We’re having fun with voices. Episode 67 and my special guest today is-
Zoe Mock 0:36
Hi, I’m Zoe.
Don Mock 0:42
I don’t think we could do this any longer.
Zoe Mock 0:44
I can’t look at you.
Don Mock 0:49
Looking at me makes it worse? (laughing)
Zoe Mock 0:55
I can’t do the budget looking at you.
Don Mock 0:58
All right, we’ll turn it off, we’ll turn it off. Okay, we’re back.
Zoe Mock 1:02
Oh!
Don Mock 1:03
All right, we’re back. Episode 67. That was fun.
Zoe Mock 1:05
Hello.
Don Mock 1:07
All right. Zoe’s in the house.
Zoe Mock 1:08
Hello.
Don Mock 1:09
Yeah, we went from immediate laughter to no laughter. All right, you’re-
Zoe Mock 1:14
That was like stomach-hurting laughter. It was pretty bad.
Don Mock 1:15
Yeah, you popped in the office.
Zoe Mock 1:17
Messing with the board.
Don Mock 1:20
The listeners out there are, obviously, familiar that you’re my daughter.
Zoe Mock 1:23
Occasionally. I am more than just a daughter, though. For the record.
Don Mock 1:25
One of the things that we share a love of, that I-
Zoe Mock 1:30
Fostered.
Don Mock 1:30
Instilled in you-
Zoe Mock 1:31
Whether I wanted it or not.
Don Mock 1:33
Yes. Is your love of sports.
Zoe Mock 1:35
The background to this, especially what we’re going to talk about, is that-
Don Mock 1:39
The background to this? Okay, well, lay it on us.
Zoe Mock 1:40
Well, there was only one television in the house, at the time, that I had access to.
Don Mock 1:44
Okay.
Zoe Mock 1:45
And Sundays were not a PBS day. They were a…
Don Mock 1:49
Sunday? Sunday, a football day.
Zoe Mock 1:50
Mmm hmm.
Don Mock 1:50
Yeah.
Zoe Mock 1:51
So we would sit and watch and I would beg for PBS and you would say, “Absolutely not. The 49ers are on.”
Don Mock 1:58
Yeah, the 49ers are on. We only had one TV-
Zoe Mock 2:00
And here we are.
Don Mock 2:01
For many, many, many years. I don’t even know what our cable situation was.
Zoe Mock 2:06
The good ole days.
Don Mock 2:06
I mean, we didn’t have a lot of cable channels and whatnot. So PBS Kids… Word Girl-
Zoe Mock 2:12
Yes.
Don Mock 2:12
- Was popular at our house. What else was rockin? What else did you enjoy?
Zoe Mock 2:16
Dinosaur Train.
Don Mock 2:17
Okay, Dinosaur Train, wow. That’s a blast from the past.
Zoe Mock 2:20
Yeah, word girl. The show Word Farm? There was farm animals that were made out of words like cow. The animal cow was made out of the letters C-O-W, it was awesome.
Don Mock 2:32
That’s weird. Okay.
Zoe Mock 2:33
Um, yeah, just a PBS kid.
Don Mock 2:36
Well, it worked out well. It’s all good. But if you wanted to watch TV on Sundays, you were subjected to having to watch the NFL. Because I love watching the NFL on Sundays.
Zoe Mock 2:47
Yep.
Don Mock 2:48
I think there was a time when you were hoping for commercials, and you enjoyed the commercials over the football itself. But then-
Zoe Mock 2:56
Far more visually interesting.
Don Mock 2:57
It got its hooks in you.
Zoe Mock 2:59
Grasped onto me and it wouldn’t let go.
Don Mock 3:01
The meat hooks of sports and the drama of your father yelling and screaming and railing.
Zoe Mock 3:06
It didn’t happen until, I would say, a few years ago.
Don Mock 3:08
It took a long time.
Zoe Mock 3:09
Because we moved. I didn’t have to watch it anymore. There were more than one television.
Don Mock 3:14
Yes.
Zoe Mock 3:14
I kind of got out of it and then slowly came back.
Don Mock 3:17
Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. So we do have a love of sports. We have traveled all the way across the country to go to sporting events.
Zoe Mock 3:25
We have multiple times.
Don Mock 3:26
We’ve done all sorts of lovely sporting, multiple times, yeah. We’ve done a lot of football trips and all sorts of fun stuff. Right?
Zoe Mock 3:32
Mmm hmm. We’re big soccer fans.
Don Mock 3:34
We are big soccer fans. We are season ticket holders.
Zoe Mock 3:37
Football, the other kind of football.
Don Mock 3:38
Yeah, the other football, the other footy. So anyway, the NFL now is- obviously, we’re talking, it’s an advertising and design podcast-
Zoe Mock 3:46
Multi-billion dollar.
Don Mock 3:47
- One of the biggest brands out there.
Zoe Mock 3:49
Ever.
Don Mock 3:49
All about protect the shield, all that good stuff. One of the things that has happened in my lifetime is football- specifically the NFL- has become a year-round event. It’s unbelievable how they have branded and turned the most mundane things on the planet into Must-See TV. I’m thinking of the underwear Olympics that we call the Combine.
Zoe Mock 4:11
The Combine.
Don Mock 4:12
Where you just watch people run.
Zoe Mock 4:13
The draft where you watch people get up and walk to a stage.
Don Mock 4:16
All about the draft.
Zoe Mock 4:17
Hold a jersey.
Don Mock 4:18
Right. The newest thing they have started to take over, which I found interesting, is the schedule release. Every team, Hey, we’re putting on our schedule releases.
Zoe Mock 4:28
We’re thinking of very specific videos.
Don Mock 4:29
This is topical. I wanted to get your take on this. This is why I grabbed you and threw you into the podcast studio, so we can get your unbiased opinion.
Zoe Mock 4:37
I was taken kicking and screaming.
Don Mock 4:41
So the schedule… some teams go all out. Some teams don’t do much, but it is fascinating. I think a lot of people look forward. A lot of fans look forward to this. Who is on my team in a play? When are they going to play?
Zoe Mock 4:51
Can I go see people in certain cities?
Don Mock 4:49
Is it a holiday? Then can I travel? Can I plan some travel around a specific event? Guys trip, girls trip? Whatever the case might be.
Zoe Mock 4:53
People trip.
Don Mock 4:53
Yeah, it’s peoples. Peoples are traveling for sports.
Zoe Mock 5:06
Yep.
Don Mock 5:06
So, I know that, because you’re a football fan, I know that you’ve seen these. I think that there are two different ways, from an advertising perspective. The two teams that had great results, but totally different tactical deployments, which I wanted to get your take on. One is our friends up north in Nashville, the Tennessee Titans, did a release video.
Zoe Mock 5:30
They did.
Don Mock 5:30
Put it on the socials. Call it Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, all the good things.
Zoe Mock 5:35
Put it out there.
Don Mock 5:36
I’m going to call that a kind of man-on-the-streets, good, old-fashioned, low budget…
Zoe Mock 5:41
Walking around holding a microphone. “Hey you.”
Don Mock 5:43
Just kind of that, let me pull, you let me interview you, low production value. It doesn’t even matter if those people are real or paid actors or whatever.
Zoe Mock 5:54
It has a good feel.
Don Mock 5:55
Yeah, it’s a one-and-a-half minute little social video of funny people on Broadway, just randomly being asked about different logos. The punch line is that they, obviously, don’t know the logos. Don’t know the team names. They’re all messed up.
Zoe Mock 6:09
They’re all out of the loop.
Don Mock 6:10
Yeah, exactly. Exactly. The polar opposite of that, I think, is what the Jacksonville Jaguars did, which was like a nine-minute, fully produced, scripted almost-movie.
Zoe Mock 6:21
Cinematic eperience.
Don Mock 6:24
Cinematic experience. Wow. Okay, where it’s like, if I’m scrolling through the socials and I see-
Zoe Mock 6:30
A nine-minute video.
Don Mock 6:32
Whoa, to commit to that-
Zoe Mock 6:34
Is this worth nine minutes of my life for a team I don’t cheer for?
Don Mock 6:38
Exactly. Yeah, exactly.
Zoe Mock 6:40
The answer is yes.
Don Mock 6:41
But both of those teams, I feel like, got unbelievable traction and brand awareness, and definitely fans of other teams- or teams that your team, not one of those two. Everybody watched those those videos.
Zoe Mock 6:58
Yeah, they were great.
Don Mock 6:59
So thoughts, I’m gonna turn it over to you. Thoughts on the two different… Do you have a preference of the two different types? Do you think there’s value in both? What are your thoughts?
Zoe Mock 7:06
I’m gonna be honest, the man on the street made me a little angry. It didn’t evoke the- I watched it. I was like, Uggghhrr.
Don Mock 7:15
Okay, angry. Angry, why?
Zoe Mock 7:17
I don’t think anger is the right word, but just a little bit agitated.
Don Mock 7:18
Cause it’s like, kind of making fun of people or-?
Zoe Mock 7:23
No, I was kind of angry that they didn’t know them, that they didn’t know the logos.
Don Mock 7:26
Okay, interesting.
Zoe Mock 7:27
If you’ve not seen the video, they go around asking what the logos are. And you get, “Oh, those are the sun dolphins.”
Don Mock 7:33
Yeah.
Zoe Mock 7:33
And it’s the Seahawks.
Don Mock 7:34
The woman was screaming, “It’s Eagles, it’s the Eagles,” but it was the Seahawks. The other one that was funny that really took a life of its own here, was somebody called the Atlanta Falcons the Red Stallions?
Zoe Mock 7:46
Yes, and then the Falcon’s Twitter changed their name to be Red Stallions.
Don Mock 7:51
Yeah, they changed all their social profiles to be the Red Stallions.
Zoe Mock 7:53
I think that’s hilarious.
Don Mock 7:55
Yeah, that’s what makes us successful.
Zoe Mock 7:57
Even though the Titans video was shorter, I felt like it was more of a waste of my time. I felt like it dragged me down a little bit intellectually.
Don Mock 8:07
Okay, so you like the more scripted-
Zoe Mock 8:10
Production value.
Don Mock 8:10
Production value video.
Zoe Mock 8:11
I thought, on the other hand, the Jags do a very good job with it. If it was bad production value, wasn’t scripted right, then it would have been a different story.
Don Mock 8:20
For those that haven’t watched or that are not even football fans, I would definitely recommend taking a look, just for fun, for 10 minutes.
Zoe Mock 8:26
I would say, especially if you’re not a football fan. It makes it even even more enticing. The gist if it.
Don Mock 8:32
The Jags leaned into a funny conspiracy theory that the NFL is scripted and so the entire video is basically all about the writers.
Zoe Mock 8:40
Yes, and the writers room, SNL style.
Don Mock 8:42
Yeah, having to basically come up with all the themes and everything that’s going to happen for the season. They got-
Zoe Mock 8:47
So-and-so’s gonna intercept so-and-so.
Don Mock 8:49
Man, everybody’s in that video. I mean, old retired players, their first draft pick ever.
Zoe Mock 8:54
Well, they call them players, like Shakespeare.
Don Mock 8:56
Yeah, exactly. They’re actors, though.
Zoe Mock 8:58
Yeah, and it was, “I was on season one through seven and got written off.”
Don Mock 9:02
Yeah, it’s pretty funny. I mean, even the owner. The owner of the team is in on the joke.
Zoe Mock 9:06
And they’re calling other owners. There’s a scene with that- Jerry Jones and the Cowboys.
Don Mock 9:11
Yeah, it’s pretty funny. It’s a swing and a hit. Did you watch the Chargers? The LA Chargers thing?
Zoe Mock 9:21
I did not.
Don Mock 9:21
Okay, so last year, they did like a full anime. Like a two-minute anime, Dragonball Z-style.
Zoe Mock 9:28
I never saw that. That never came into my socials.
Don Mock 9:31
They followed that up this year, with another anime scenario.
Zoe Mock 9:54
Okay.
Don Mock 9:35
It’s pretty well done. It’s definitely a look. It’s definitely a vibe, but that was an interesting take, too. Our 49ers did not really do anything special. They wrote a one-minute little song. It’s kind of a little hip-hop experience. Then at the end, it was like, Oh, here’s the schedule. It wasn’t really tied in.
Zoe Mock 9:54
It’s, okay, cool, and then you move on.
Don Mock 9:56
The Falcons did a fun thing on social of, all of the teams that were going to play, if they were sneakers. There was heavy illustrated style of all the different teams made into sneakers, which I thought was kind of interesting, too.
Zoe Mock 10:11
That’s cool.
Don Mock 10:11
So you’re more into the- you don’t like the candid sort of approach?
Zoe Mock 10:14
No, it didn’t really excite, in my opinion.
Don Mock 10:19
All right.
Zoe Mock 10:20
I don’t know.
Don Mock 10:22
That’s all your commentary? Okay. All right. All right. Thanks, everybody.
Zoe Mock 10:27
Good pod. Yeah, I don’t know why.
Don Mock 10:30
We can go back to doing funny voices, voice modulation.
Zoe Mock 10:32
I don’t know why it doesn’t tickle the right bone. I just-
Don Mock 10:36
That’s okay. You’re a young, exuberant NFL fan. It’s interesting.
Zoe Mock 10:39
Maybe it’s to the extent, that I feel like they have a lot more in their arsenal, to have a bigger production value, and do more. It was just kind of like, Eh. I think what made it, it is other teams latching on to it. Maybe they asked for that prior. Or figured out that they would branch out and make more people in the region grasp on to it, and then that would become a laugh. I think that’s hilarious. I love the Red Stallions. But I don’t think the video made the Red Stallions funny. I think the Red Stallions latching onto the Falcons is what made it funny.
Don Mock 11:10
Yes. I would agree with that. But I think it’s an interesting idea. Maybe idea is not the right word. But it’s an interesting example for brands, for companies, companies that we work with. Budget is contingent on scope. They were both given the same assignment of, “Hey, we need to release the schedule. We need to tell our fans what the schedule is.” One clearly, you would assume that the budget is a lot higher, and there was a lot more runway taken. Took a lot longer and all that good stuff for Jacksonville. Versus the perception of the man on street and a low production-
Zoe Mock 11:54
And we have no idea how much they spent.
Don Mock 11:56
No, it’s irrelevant. It’s irrelevant, but it is a good example of… both of them, I would consider were incredibly successful. Both done very well. They both did exactly what they wanted to do. They got the word out and they branded their teams, and they had fun with it. Both of them were funny.
Zoe Mock 12:10
Maybe it feels overpopulated for me, in my feed, because I see so many man-on-the-street things already. To be honest, I think now that I’m thinking about it, that’s kind of-
Don Mock 12:19
It’s like a casual Tiktok kind of approach.
Zoe Mock 12:21
But I see so many of those. I mean, as a person completely glued to their phone and Tik Tok. I see so many of those people walking up, “What’s your opinion on blah, blah, blah.” I follow this one guy that asks people New York City trivia, for 20 bucks a question. I’ve gotten so much New York City trivia.
Don Mock 12:42
Really? That’s intersting.
Zoe Mock 12:43
I see a lot of this. I feel like I consume a lot of it, that it didn’t feel special. I think maybe that’s what it is.
Don Mock 12:49
Well, the other thing to consider is subject matter. I love chef reactions. I’m late to the party on that, I’m a newer follower. But food on Instagram, food on tick tock, it’s always food. They go hand-in-hand, I would almost say, years and years ago, Instagram was such such a foodie sort of scenario. So to have a professional chef critique these horrible, horrible homemade recipes-
Zoe Mock 13:20
Or just people or big creators.
Don Mock 13:24
I find that hilarious. He is no holds barred, just letting the F-bombs fly, and doesn’t care. There’s something really interesting and kind of refreshing. But it’s the same convention. It’s the same Tik Tok, side-by-side and he’s just commenting on-
Zoe Mock 13:40
Just duetting it.
Don Mock 13:40
Yeah, exactly.
Zoe Mock 13:42
He does that to a very famous pastry chef, where he starts off and as angry as he is. But it’s like, Are you F-ing kidding me? This is amazing. Of course, you’re doing this.
Don Mock 13:52
Are you talking about the chocolate guy?
Zoe Mock 13:55
Yeah, the chocolateer?
Don Mock 13:54
Everything he gives him, like 10,000 out of 10, absolutely would eat. All that good stuff. But he has a funny vibe. He has a funny attitude, like, “Hey, that’s awful, but I’d still try it.”
Zoe Mock 13:56
There’s an element of like, “I mean, I’m a chef, but I do understand people need to eat.” He seems relatively understanding of the way the world works.
Don Mock 14:19
I pulled us off topic, though. Because we’re talking about-
Zoe Mock 14:23
It is an interesting way to brand things.
Don Mock 14:25
Yeah, absolutely.
Zoe Mock 14:26
Because I’ve started to get sponsored posts done in that very Do-It-Yourself way, of we’ve hired the creator for chef reactions to react to some restaurant making something professionally.
Don Mock 14:36
Yeah, absolutely. There’s that old expression, truth in advertising. The Volvo, it’s “boxy but safe. Hey, we’re not the best looking car but we’re safe.” So there is definitely something to, leaning into the truth, even if it’s potentially perceived as a negative to round that corner to make it a positive. We’re not good looking, but you’ll arrive safely. That’s important to young families, things like that. Now, they don’t really use that. I mean, that’s not really a thing, but that was kind of a common colloquialism for quite a long time. But the NFL, it doesn’t get any more expensive, any more luxurious. I mean, it is unbelievable.
Zoe Mock 14:46
Creme de la creme.
Don Mock 14:57
I think the Commanders just sold for like $6 billion. I mean, the whole thing is- the amount of money and the power of the brand is outlandish, but very, very interesting. It’s two totally different approaches, with the perception of two totally different budgets. Yet they both end with-
Zoe Mock 15:37
The same thing.
Don Mock 15:38
- The same amount of success.
Zoe Mock 15:40
It’s just a schedule.
Don Mock 15:41
The other thing that’s really interesting about sports, is that there is such a hatred, rage and vitriol, surrounding sports. It’s “I love this team. I absolutely hate-“
Zoe Mock 15:54
The Seahawks.
Don Mock 15:55
I hate the other team, anything like-
Zoe Mock 15:58
“Do not talk to me. I can’t even look at you right now.”
Don Mock 16:04
When your team is now talking about other teams, I think that’s potentially what made the Titans videos so funny. They’re kind of poking at some of the other teams.
Zoe Mock 16:17
Okay, I could see that.
Don Mock 16:17
And having some fun with it. But it is making fun of the bridesmaids and stuff like that, that’s all over…
Zoe Mock 16:24
It’s all over Nashville, and everything. We don’t know if they’re paid actors or not.
Don Mock 16:31
Doesn’t matter.
Zoe Mock 16:31
But it has the feeling of like, you didn’t-
Don Mock 16:34
I think of that, because I’m an advertising. I venture to guess that 98% of everybody who watched that video-
Zoe Mock 16:41
Thinks it’s real people?
Don Mock 16:42
Thinks it’s real people.
Zoe Mock 16:43
It doesn’t matter. You’re right.
Don Mock 16:45
The video is still successful, even if those people were not inebriated at the time and were paid actors or whatever. So anyway, scheduled release video. It’s an interesting social avenue. it’s an interesting-
Zoe Mock 17:01
They’re branching out in different ways to take over other parts of the offseason.
Don Mock 17:04
The NFL just rules all, beyond anything. We’re just hoping for soccer to climb into fourth place, displace hockey.
Zoe Mock 17:13
No, no. I like hockey.
Don Mock 17:16
I don’t know, maybe hockey, we’ll come back to Atlanta. For our third team.
Zoe Mock 17:18
The day I see that.
Don Mock 17:19
That would be amazing.
Zoe Mock 17:20
It would be FANtastic.
Don Mock 17:23
This is old news, by the time this comes out. Tempe or Phoenix or whatever, they voted and to not fund any stadium. So now the Coyotes are probably going to leave.
Zoe Mock 17:33
Oh, really?
Don Mock 17:33
The Thrashers were sacrificed to save the Coyotes out in Phoenix.
Zoe Mock 17:38
In the desert.
Don Mock 17:38
Because they went belly up.
Hockey in the desert makes so much sense.
They say we had an attendance problem, but we did not. It was horrible ownership, Atlanta- that’s another podcast-
Zoe Mock 17:47
For them having left when I was five years old, I’m still heartbroken.
Don Mock 17:50
No you were older. You were older.
Zoe Mock 17:51
No, it was 2008, I was five.
Don Mock 17:53
No, you were… well…
Zoe Mock 17:56
I was five.
Don Mock 17:56
Okay.
Zoe Mock 17:57
I remember this.
Don Mock 17:58
That was a crazy story.
Zoe Mock 18:00
Cause the Trashers shirt I have still fits.
Don Mock 18:04
That’s great. I love the Thrashers. Man, they were awesome.
Zoe Mock 18:06
I miss them. Still miss them.
Don Mock 18:08
Well, one never knows, maybe-
Zoe Mock 18:10
Tell the story about that game. Because it ties in with Rob.
Don Mock 18:14
It does tie in to Rob. Rob and I took our daughters-
Zoe Mock 18:17
I was one of them.
Don Mock 18:17
- to their first hockey game. Gosh, do you remember who we were playing? I don’t remember who we were playing.
Zoe Mock 18:25
No, I was distracted so well, because of what you’re going to talk about.
Don Mock 18:29
There was all sorts of crazy things happening at the game. I mean, there’s the Thrasher jumping around. The guy in the big suit running around.
Zoe Mock 18:37
Fire coming down.
Don Mock 18:38
There’s a fire coming out of the Trasher head. Thrasher head’s on the ice.
Zoe Mock 18:38
That was awesome.
Don Mock 18:38
Every time somebody goes to their first hockey game, they’re always surprised how cold it is in there.
Zoe Mock 18:46
I was surprised. In Phillip’s arena.
Don Mock 18:47
It’s like, “yeah, I wasn’t expecting it to be so cold.” It’s ice, you know? So we are down in the, in the corner, pretty nice and low. Amazing slapshot. Boom- hits a guy right in the face.
Zoe Mock 19:03
Right in the face.
Don Mock 19:04
I don’t think he had the eye visor.
Zoe Mock 19:06
He did not. Nope.
Don Mock 19:07
It hit him right in the face, right under his eye.
Zoe Mock 19:10
Blood everywhere, like eye socket-
Don Mock 19:12
I thought his eyeball exploded. I thought, for sure, his eye was completely gone. Yeah, he immediately- boom, on the ice, like a sack of potatoes. Blood is pouring out.
Zoe Mock 19:21
Blood is all over the ice.
Don Mock 19:23
All over the place.
Zoe Mock 19:24
Stop the game.
Don Mock 19:25
Full stop.
Zoe Mock 19:26
Off TV, right in front of us.
Don Mock 19:28
Rob and I, basically, just reached across, covered your faces and was like, “Look at that thing over there.”
Zoe Mock 19:34
“Look at the cotton candy.”
Don Mock 19:35
Then it was like “time for snacks, everyone.” Man they had to come out and broom the ice, and they had buckets of water to get rid of all the blood. It was unbelievable. Now, side note, he did not lose his eyeball.
Zoe Mock 19:49
No. Full recovery.
Don Mock 19:50
Full recovery, because he’s a badass hockey player, of course. But a puck… he broke his- what’s that, the orbital? Is that what it’s called, the orbital? I mean, he basically broke his face.
Zoe Mock 19:59
Yes.
Don Mock 20:00
He probably played the next game, as far as I know, he’s a badass hockey guy.
Zoe Mock 20:03
Just with the face masks.
Don Mock 20:04
I will never- wow, that was intense. That was one hell of a slap shot.
Zoe Mock 20:09
It was a great script from the game.
Don Mock 20:11
Seriously, speaking of leaning into the script of the game. But we got some cool T shirts and all that good stuff. Then we got screwed by the ownership.
Zoe Mock 20:18
And Phoenix.
Don Mock 20:19
And relocation teams.
Zoe Mock 20:20
I’ll take them, if they want to come back to Atlanta.
Don Mock 20:22
Hockey, you’re dead to me now until you’re back.
Zoe Mock 20:24
No, they’re not. I lie awake every night just dreaming of their return.
Don Mock 20:28
No, you don’t. I do love that you love sports. That’s super fun. It is the greatest drama out there.
Zoe Mock 20:33
It’s so dramatic. It’s great. It’s like the real housewives but sometimes better.
Don Mock 20:36
Sports is pain, is what it is. Then every once in a while, a handful of times in your life, you get the sweet exuberance of unmitigated joy with strangers.
Zoe Mock 20:49
Yep.
Don Mock 20:50
And it is such a magical experience. It’s so much fun. So you did get to experience that with Atlanta United MLS Cup, which was super exciting. What a lovely night.
