Downtown Atlanta has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century when it served as the terminus for the Western & Atlantic railroad line.
The city was originally named “Marthasville” before being renamed “Atlanta” in 1845.
Downtown Atlanta also boasts a diverse range of architectural styles, reflecting its evolution over time.
You can find a mix of historic structures, such as the iconic Flatiron Building and the Candler Building, alongside modern skyscrapers like the Bank of America Plaza and the Westin Peachtree Plaza.

The Mercedez-Benz Stadium

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park is significant to the civil rights movement.
You can find it in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood of Atlanta.
The park encompasses several significant sites, including the birth home of Dr. King, the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church where King and his father served as pastors, and the “I Have a Dream” World Peace Rose Garden.
Visitors can walk in King’s footsteps and trace his life’s work promoting social equality.
Just a short walk from the park, The King Center offers a deep dive into the legacy of Dr. King.
Established in 1968 by Coretta Scott King, it serves as the official memorial dedicated to advancing the legacy of Dr. King.

Centennial Olympic Park

Skyview Atlanta
This colossal Ferris wheel stands at nearly 20 stories high in the heart of downtown Atlanta, adjacent to Centennial Olympic Park.
Each of the 42 climate-controlled gondolas provides a comfortable and scenic ride, with the VIP gondola offering a glass floor and Ferrari-style seats for an extra touch of luxury.
Fun Fact: SkyView Atlanta is not originally from Atlanta.
Before making its home in Atlanta in 2013, the Ferris wheel was located in Cape Town, South Africa, for the 2010 World Cup, and later in Paris.
This traveling giant is a testament to Atlanta’s growing appeal as a world-class city, adding a unique and exciting experience for both locals and tourists alike.
With its stunning nighttime illumination, SkyView Atlanta is not just a ride, but a symbol of Atlanta’s vibrant spirit.
Fox Theatre
The Fox Theatre, an architectural gem in the heart of Atlanta, is a testament to the city’s rich cultural scene.
When it opened its doors in 1929, this grand theatre was originally intended to be a home for Atlanta’s Shriners organization.
With its ornate, Arabic-inspired interior and the starry, “sky” ceiling, the theatre is designed to evoke a sense of being in an old Arabian courtyard.
This iconic venue has seen performances from numerous world-renowned artists and hosts more than 150 shows each year.
Notably, in 1974, the theatre narrowly escaped demolition, saved by the “Save the Fox” campaign run by Atlanta citizens who rallied for its preservation.
Today, it stands as a beloved historic landmark, offering guided tours for those curious about its history, architecture, and the numerous legends that echo in its halls.
The Children’s Museum of Atlanta
The Children’s Museum of Atlanta is an engaging and educational destination for children and families.
It is the only children’s museum in Atlanta, providing a hands-on, interactive learning environment that is both fun and enriching for young minds.
Designed specifically for children aged 8 and under, the museum is packed with exhibits and activities that encourage imaginative play, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
Highlights include the “Fundamentally Food” exhibit, where children can learn about the farm-to-table process, and the “Gateway to the World”, where they can climb a multi-story structure and learn about different cultures.

Underground Atlanta
This subterranean complex was originally the city level in the 1860s, when Atlanta was a bustling railway hub.
However, due to the city’s increasing problem with traffic congestion, a series of viaducts were built in the early 20th century, effectively raising the street level.
The old storefronts and buildings were abandoned and forgotten, left beneath the new city streets.
It wasn’t until the 1960s that these ‘underground’ sections of Atlanta were rediscovered, and subsequently transformed into a shopping and nightlife district.
Although it has seen periods of closure and revival, Underground Atlanta remains a unique slice of history embedded in the city’s landscape.
Visitors can stroll the brick-lined streets, explore the shops and restaurants, and learn about Atlanta’s past through the historic plaques scattered throughout the district.
Where is Downtown Atlanta?
You can get to Downtown Atlanta by various means of transportation, including car, train, and bus.
The city has an extensive public transportation system, making it easily accessible to tourists and residents alike.
Downtown Atlanta is also conveniently located near major highways, including I-75 and I-85.
If you are driving from the airport, you can take I-85 North to get to downtown in about 20 minutes.
For those taking the train, MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) offers easy access to downtown via its North and South lines, with multiple stations located throughout the area.
