Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx, changed the way women think about shapewear.

What Inspired Sara Blakely to Create Spanx?  

Sara Blakely didn’t plan to start a fashion revolution.

Growing up in Florida, she dreamed of being a lawyer.

After a tough time with law school, she ended up selling fax machines door-to-door — a job that tested her patience and sparked her creativity.

One day, she cut the feet off a pair of pantyhose to wear under white pants.

It was a quick fix, but it worked so well that she thought, “Why doesn’t this exist already?”

With $5,000 in savings and a lot of grit, she created Spanx in 2000.

Her idea was simple but brilliant: comfortable shapewear that helps women feel confident.

What Challenges Did Sara Blakely Face, and How Did She Overcome Them?  

Starting a business is never easy, and Sara faced big obstacles.

Factories told her “no” over and over because they didn’t think her idea would sell.

But she kept calling until she found one in North Carolina willing to take a chance.

Sara personally pitched her product to stores, even showing buyers how Spanx worked by modeling them herself.

Her big break came when Oprah Winfrey called Spanx her “Favorite Product” of the year, launching the brand into the spotlight.
